"Heinz Ketchup: United States vs Canada"

Though this may have been just a fluke, but isn't it interesting that out of the five restaurants that I went to in Montreal, Canada, had Ketchup with very different ingredients than five different restaurants I went to in New York and Vermont...

List of Ingredients in Ketchup from Canada:

-Tomato paste
-Ripe tomatoes
-Liquid sugar
-White vinegar
-Salt
-Onion powder
-Spices

List of Ingredients in Ketchup from the United States:

-Tomato concentrate from ripe tomatoes
-Distilled vinegar
-High Fructose Corn Syrup
-Corn Syrup
-Salt
-Spice
-Onion powder
-Natural Flavoring

Why such a major difference? Aren't they both Heinz Ketchup?

Aren't we lucky that in the US we get GM High Fructose Corn Syrup AND GM Corn Syrup! (written with total sarcasm!)

And why does the US Ketchup have the extra ingredient(s) of "Natural Flavoring"? Since both Ketchup's have "spice(s)" listed, which I could understand could be their special proprietary blend and a secret kept from the Ketchup eating world....so then what exactly is "Natural Flavoring"?

Let's go to the Heinz Ketchup website and see what they have to say about it!

"The natural flavorings listed in our ingredient statement consist of natural spice extracts and oils. The exact ingredients included under the “natural flavorings” on the Heinz® Ketchup label are considered proprietary, because recipes cannot be patented."

Okay.....then are we to understand that in the US, Heinz Ketchup has two different proprietary blends in the same product? I guess we'll never know for sure....

But there is one thing that I do know for sure!

Always, always, always read the labels! And never assume that all things with the exact same name and from the same company are made equal...because when it comes to Ketchup...they are apparently not!"
