What's it all about?    James Layton Fitness

The vast majority think it's a vanity thing, outsiders don't really understand. What's the point of going to the gym, just to punish yourself?

It's a difficult question to answer, but I will give my verdict of why I train. Initially, I will be honest it is more about vanity, trying to look better etc. But this soon subsides, as you become a more advanced trainee it becomes less and less about how you look but more about various other benefits: in my opinion the biggest one is the ability to switch off, from other stressors that might be going on in your life, it's hard to focus on much else other than what you are doing in the gym. Exercise in my opinion is one of the few activities where you do just switch off from everything, everything doesn't seem as bad after training.

It builds character, training is a habit like anything else. There seems to an illusion that practitioners, pro bodybuilders or some of the other big names in the industry love to train all the time. I know some of them personally and they don't, they are just normal people, they too get tired, they too are busy. Probably busier than you...

It builds character because you get into the habit of doing things, even if you don't want to. Just like lots of things in life you know you should do, but you don't. Get better at doing things you don't want to do. This same character can be applied to other areas of your life.

The common excuse is i'm too busy, the reality is someone busier than you is achieving their goals while you watch TV, because you're just too busy...Or if you really are busy, get up earlier, prioritise your time better. Give up something if you have to.

So while it's easy to come up with excuses, or put it off until January. If this is you, don't even start in January, you will give up. If you need the new year to turn, before you invest in yourself, then you clearly are not going to achieve your goals.

Start today, it's not easy but it gets easier.....

The more you do it, the easier it becomes just like any habit.

You were probably crap at driving when you first started but, after a few mistakes it becomes effortless, even automatic.

Training and exercise is the same. Start today...
